The emerald green Opal lake is surrounded by cliff sides that normally only the birds can reach, and when you stand at the foot of them, the height of the majestic rock walls can completely take your breath away. But those rocks are exactly where the challenge begins and the adventure takes place. In the skilled hands of Laust Højmark, you can become part of the adventure. He is a certified climbing instructor and owner of Klatring Bornholm.
For Laust, climbing is not just a way of life, but also a lifelong passion. He grew up close to the Paradisbakkerne and the rocky coast at Svaneke and has been climbing rocks since he was quite young, and there are no rocks on the island that he has not climbed. The passion for rock climbing has taken him all over the world, until in 2020 he opened Klatring Bornholm at Opalsøen on Nordbornholm. Together with a team of well-trained instructors, whom Laust himself trains to be responsible for safety, he offers both climbing and rappelling for trained and untrained, large and small.
No one is pushed beyond their ability, but taken by the hand and guided safely up and down the high cliff sides. It is therefore a unique outdoor activity for the whole family, and a day in the company of Laust and his team offers experiences for all the senses in a very special part of Bornholm’s nature.
Up on top of the old quarry, there is a special atmosphere. The desolate, raw impression is a characteristic of the former Bornholm quarries, where the cultural landscape has partly grown into forest between the large pieces of rock, and nature’s green foliage has taken over.
The area is owned by the Danish Nature Agency, and Laust and the team cooperate respectfully and in accordance with the rules required to be able to offer outdoor activities here. Laust’s climbing and rappelling activity can take most of a day, with a break for bonfires and bread rolls, as a cozy meeting point. In this way, the connection between the active and the relaxing becomes a holistic experience for body and soul. No matter how old you are, you have had an experience of a lifetime.
After a long day, you can end with a walk down to the Opal lake along winding paths. Here you can jump from the edge of the breach and 7 meters down into Lake Opal for a refreshing thrill if you dare. Because, as with all quarry lakes, you don’t have to go down more than half a meter before the water feels really cold. A different and exciting way to experience Bornholm.
