Restaurant BrøDDan is a family restaurant in the best sense of the term. The ambience encourages children and adults, young and old alike to relax and enjoy themselves. The beautiful views are something that everyone can enjoy. You’ll never tire of gazing at the Baltic. The food is just as delightful as the views. This is because BrøDDan provides a buffet – midway along the steeply sloping street in Gudhjem – but it is also possible to order pizzas and sandwiches in the restaurant, or a take-away.
The lunch buffet is a classic selection of Danish lunch dishes, cold and hot, including salt-fried herring, a Bornholm speciality, and variations of the restaurant’s special, crisp salads.
The evening buffet is equally diversified – but without herring. It features different seafood dishes, the soup of the day, a wide selection of speciality salads, hot dishes, roasts, condiments, sauces and gravies. There’s something for everyone. For dessert there is a well-stocked ice-cream buffet, as well as old-fashioned warm apple charlotte – if you’re not already full, that is! There is also a wide selection of beverages with and without alcohol. Besides wine, cocktails, draught beer from Svaneke Bryghus and soft drinks, other local breweries are also represented in abundance at this popular family restaurant.
When you arrive at Restaurant BrøDDan, previously named ‘Valnøddeterrassen’ (Walnut Patio) after the large walnut tree that once stood on the patio, you climb some stairs, and suddenly the dinner’s views open up to you. The combination of Brøddegade’s steep slope and the stairs gives Restaurant BrøDDan sea views that are simply magnificent. You can choose to sit out on one of the large patios, where, as well as enjoying the lovely view, you can also observe the street life in Brøddegade below.
If you are thirsty in the afternoon, taking a break with a cocktail or coffee on one of Restaurant BrøDDan’s patios can be a nice, relaxing alternative to the bustling waterfront cafés. Perhaps you need to indulge your sweet tooth with the restaurant’s old-fashioned, warm apple charlotte topped with either whipped cream or soft-serve ice cream, as you choose.
BrøDDan has a bright, accommodating design. One of the first things you notice is a large stunning oil painting by Ingelise Westman. Ingelise is a highly acclaimed local artist, who is also a sculptor as well as a painter. She frequently exhibits her works on Bornholm and has also exhibited in other parts of Denmark on several occasions.
The picture is not the only aesthetic initiative to satisfy senses other than taste buds. Restaurant BrøDDan has integrated a green touch with reindeer lichen on the walls to help improve the restaurant’s acoustics. Some interesting initiatives have been implemented here which are worth visiting in their own right.
“The focal point of our restaurant is our buffet. This is what we love to make – and what we’re good at,” seems to be Restaurant BrøDDan’s motto, but it also focuses on providing a cosy atmosphere and good service. On busy days, BrøDDan’s adjoining rooms are put to use, and the entire restaurant can be filled up both indoors and outdoors on the patio. It is advisable to check the current opening hours on the website and book a table. Both premises can be rented out for private functions with the set-up based on a concluded agreement.
