Restaurant BrøDDan is a family restaurant in the best sense of the word. The ambience encourages children and adults, young and old alike to relax and enjoy themselves. The beautiful views are something that everyone can enjoy. One never tires of gazing at the Baltic. The food is just as delightful as the views. Situated midway down the steep street of Brøddegade in Gudhjem, BrøDDan provides a well-appointed buffet, as well as pizzas and sandwiches, either in the restaurant to take away.
The lunch buffet features a classic selection of hot and cold Danish luncheon dishes, including fried salt-cured herring (a Bornholm speciality) and variations of the restaurant’s crisp speciality salads. There is something for everyone.
The evening buffet is equally versatile – but without the herring. It features several different seafood dishes, the soup of the day, a wide selection of speciality salads, roasts, sauces and gravies. For dessert there is a well-stocked ice-cream buffet, including old-fashioned warm apple charlotte – if you’re not already full, that is!
The beverage selection is also wide-ranging. Besides wine, draught beer from Svaneke Brewery and soft drinks, several other local breweries are also abundantly represented at this popular family restaurant.
When you arrive at Restaurant BrøDDan, previously named “Valnøddeterrassen” (Walnut Patio) after the large walnut tree that once stood on the patio, you climb some stairs, and suddenly the dinner’s views open up to you. The combination of Brøddegade’s steep slope and the stairs gives Restaurant BrøDDan sea views that are simply magnificent. You can choose to sit on one of the large patios, where, as well as enjoying the lovely view, you can also observe the street life in Brøddegade below.
If you need a cup of coffee in the afternoon, taking a break on one of Restaurant BrøDDan’s patios can be a nice, relaxing alternative to the bustling waterfront cafés. Perhaps your sweet tooth needs pampering by tasting the restaurant’s old fashioned warm apple charlotte, served with your choice of whipped cream or soft-serve ice cream.
Inside, one of the first things you notice is the stunning large oil painting by Ingelise Westman. Ingelise is a highly acclaimed local artist, who is also a sculptor as well as a painter. She frequently exhibits her works on Bornholm and has also exhibited in other parts of Denmark on several occasions.
The picture is not the only aesthetic initiative to satisfy senses other than taste buds. Restaurant BrøDDan has integrated a green touch as part of improving the restaurant’s acoustics. These interesting initiatives are worth a visit in themselves.
“Our restaurant revolves around the buffet. This is what we love to make – and what we’re good at,” seems to be Restaurant BrøDDan’s motto, but a pleasant atmosphere and good service also have high priority.
There is also a sports bar in the rooms adjoining the family restaurant, where you can enjoy beer and snacks from the restaurant’s menu, while checking the latest results or watching a soccer match with friends. Finally, both facilities can be rented for private functions.
