Kadeau Bornholm

The road winds through a tunnel of pine trees, and at the end the Baltic Sea spreads out with chalk-white sand and vast sky. On the edge of the dunes stands the humble wooden house that houses Bornholm’s only restaurant with a Michelin star.

Arriving from the back of the restaurant, you pass by the barred windows, where you can look into the kitchen. The experience continues inside the restaurant, where guests – in the open kitchen – can watch as the team prepares the very menu they are about to eat.

The kitchen team starts every day with a visit to Kadeau’s own vegetable garden to pick herbs, berries and vegetables for the day’s servings. A dessert may contain golden raspberries one day, red raspberries the next and dark currants the third, depending on what is best that particular morning.

The kitchen garden also determines the garnish for the restaurant’s unofficial signature dish, salmon, which is salted, cold-smoked and finally hot-smoked before being served with warm saffron or lavender butter. Guests who have tasted it describe the taste as rich and decadent and the texture as foie gras.

And when you’ve had your fill of food and impressions, you can stay overnight at Dunes Beach Camp, Kadeau’s glamping retreat, just ten minutes away. Kadeau provides transportation.

Kadeau – even without a table reservation

The garden by the road

You don’t need a table reservation to enjoy something from Kadeau’s kitchen. Both at the restaurant’s vegetable garden in Øster Sømarken and outside the restaurant itself, you’ll find a roadside stall where you can buy a bite of the garden’s bounty or the kitchen’s creations: homemade jam in jars, freshly squeezed honey from the house’s beehives and vinegars made from wild herbs. Every now and then, fig cuttings appear – twigs from the mother plant behind the restaurant, wrapped and ready to take root in a new place.
It’s an opportunity to take a souvenir and a piece of Bornholm’s microclimate home with you. The roadside stall operates on trust. No clerk, no opening hours.

Dunes Beach Camp

Ten minutes from the restaurant, at Balka Strand, is Dunes Beach Camp. Kadeau’s glamping retreat, which also has a restaurant – and it is not reserved for the camp’s guests. Everyone is welcome to come in and be served breakfast, lunch, snacks, a glass of wine or a full evening menu.
If you want to stay overnight, you can book one of the canvas tents, erected directly in the sand with a view of the sea. sleep in a real bed, with soft bedding to the sound of the Baltic Sea breaking against the beach just a few meters away.
Kadeau’s hospitable universe of Bornholm extends from the kitchen garden in the Øster Sømarken to the dunes at Balka.
