In the courtyard behind the old half-timbered house in Aarsdale, there is a special calm. Just a few steps from the hustle and bustle of the harbor and the roar of the sea, artist Tilde Engstrøm works in her studio. After many years at art academies in Scotland, Japan and Portugal, she returned to Bornholm, driven by a deep preoccupation with presence as a quiet counterbalance to a modern, hectic world.
This became the foundation for MUTE studio – a word that simply means quiet studio. You don’t rush through MUTE studio. Here, the space is set aside for contemplation, and the atmosphere invites you to breathe a little deeper. It is a living, working workshop, where sculptures, vases and cups in ceramic slowly come into being, while brushstrokes transform empty canvases. The walls are characterized by calm, open compositions. The motifs often revolve around the surrounding sea and the vast sky, occasionally with humans as a quiet element in the landscape. A large part of the paintings function as visual windows onto the water. The open views provide air and encourage reflection, while creating a smooth transition between nature outside and art inside. Ceramics are displayed on the shelves, ready to create atmosphere in new homes. As something new, MUTE studio has also been expanded with a showroom in Nexø, where ceramics and paintings have also found space.
For Tilde, the meaning lies in establishing connection, whether it is through personal works, calming murals in schools or creative workshops for business people with a busy everyday life.
When MUTE studio was founded, the vision was to create a space where calm and authenticity are experienced through art, meditation and creativity. The interest in inner resonance is reflected in both Tilde’s artistic practice and teaching. The work is built on a solid foundation. With training in mindfulness, nervous system therapy, Groove dance and psychotherapy, the skills are combined to balance stressed nervous systems and awaken joy in life. Here, the urge to create and therapy flow effortlessly together in a joint effort to create a breathing space. A place where time is allowed to stand still, so that the mind can slowly find its natural balance.
In the mornings, on selected days, time is set aside to cultivate inner silence. Here, people gather for sessions of meditation, movement or mindfulness exercises in a calm setting. Each practice is designed to support the overall atmosphere of grounding in the place.
