MAY B FOR YOU

Upon entering May Bjørn Riis’ evocative shop and workshop ‘May B for you’, you cannot help but be captivated by the calm and beauty you encounter. Style and functionality go hand in hand here, captured in jewellery made of glass.

May uses her small marvels of clear, transparent glass beads containing sand – which she calls ‘Bornholmerperlen’ (Bornholm Beads) – to create stories. Every single bead created by May tells a unique story about its wearer. May works with each customer to create the design, and together they find precisely the story that is meaningful for the individual. There’s always a place for the heart in May’s Bornholm Beads.

May often receives small, lined envelopes containing sand, and a brief explanation about where the sand comes from: the sender’s childhood holiday home; the site where the sender was standing when they were proposed to, or sand from the beach on which the sender’s children played every summer. In this way, it is possible to carry these pleasant, memorable stories of life and love wherever the wearer goes wearing that necklace or pair of earrings. The stories are as many and varied as the individuals themselves. The beads embody relations between people and the special places they share.

The shop features refined beads of coloured glass on small pedestals, each with its own distinctive mark and expression retrieved from nature. There are beautiful ‘cairn chains’, reminiscent of sand-polished glass fragments found along beaches. There are rings and bracelets with beads in the bright hues of the sea, the sun and nature, moulded into round, soft shapes. They are all so sensual that it is almost impossible to resist picking them up and feeling how splendidly heavy they are to hold. And you are welcome to do that, too.

Bornholm and love

May is a qualified glass craft artist, a graduate of the School of Design’s Craft Programme – Glass and Ceramics in Nexø, where she arrived in 2004. She fell in love with Bornholm, and she and her husband decided to stay and raise a family here. After spending a few years gathering knowledge and experience in the sector, it seemed only natural to go into business on her own. The shop in Gudhjem opened in 2016, and later relocated 200 metres further up the steep main street. This is where she pursues her craft as she pleases and unleashes her creativity. The results speak for themselves.
