GodtBornholm is synonymous with exclusive haute couture knitwear and textile design from Bornholm. Underlying the classic logo of overlaid sewing needle and knitting needle, ram’s head and hand is a firmly rooted love for natural materials and the creative process where quality and fine artisanal quality converge. GodtBornholm invites you to travel through time and experiences – focusing on original design and historical inspiration – into a universe of clothing, knitting kits and handwoven furnishing fabrics. With new classics such as the fishermen’s sweater ‘Årsdale’ or the granddad sweater ‘Gudhjem’, GodtBornholm has made a name for itself as a supplier of exclusive everyday design and ‘knitwear on demand’ for discerning connoisseurs.
The creation and fusion of craft art with commercial design resulted from a unique team effort between tailor and textile designer Stine Godt and her husband Thomas Godt, lecturer and former external lecturer for the Royal Danish Academy – Design, Bornholm, in Nexø. From their home and workshop in the picturesque seaside village of Svaneke, they create both one-off and signature designs inspired by Bornholm’s scenic splendour and cultural history.
The collections are primarily made from select natural yarns of sustainable, Bornholm merino wool – a rare, exclusive product – of which GodtBornholm is sole distributor by special agreement. The merino wool is exquisitely soft and comfortable and of a rare fine quality. This explains why GodtBornholm’s designs maintain their look, shape and personality, becoming enduring products you want to take care of.
GodtBornholm can be experienced in ‘Postgade 21’, Svaneke’s arts and crafts shop collective, as well as at exhibitions and in several of the island’s craft art and design shops. It is also possible to visit the business at its open workshop in Svaneke by appointment.
It seemed only natural to Stine and Thomas to create a version of the classic fisherman’s sweater, inspired by Bornholm’s age-old fishery traditions, and name it after the fishing hamlet of Årsdale. The thick upper part and slimmer lower part are designed to fit into a pair of fisherman’s overalls where the lower part of the sweater must fit snugly under the overalls, whereas the upper part provides additional warmth across the chest. The collar is even thicker to give additional comfort and warmth. The sweater comes in white, mahogany, or natural shades of pale grey, but like a number of GodtBornholm’s models, it will occasionally be available in unique, hand-dyed limited editions – both as ‘knitwear on demand’ and knitting kits – direct from the rocky island.
In the world of GodtBornholm, you enter a peaceful atmosphere, inspired by Bornholm’s scenic splendour and cultural history extending far back in time. To counterbalance the hectic ways of modern life, the design universe of GodtBornholm strives for intimacy and calm through its endeavours with materials, patterns and shapes. The artisanal quality is excellent throughout, ensuring an experience that will handed down for generations to come. The coveted designs are available as knitting kits for contemplation and peace of mind, as the knitter derives pleasure from creating enduring knitwear at the same time.
